Cinemoments: Fried Green Tomatoes

Cinemoments: Fried Green Tomatoes

During these trying and uncertain times, we have been trying to spread a little bit of love and movie magic by showcasing some of our favourite moments in film.

As International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March, this month is the perfect opportunity to highlight the most passionate, resilient and independent women on film. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and is a story that celebrates love among and between women in both 1920s and 1990s Alabama. Based on the best-selling novel by Fannie Flagg, the film is full of laughter, drama, and joyous moments of community.

Nominated for two Oscars®, and held together by moving performances from Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Mary-Louise Parker, this film is a potent testament to how love and friendship can withstand time, judgement, violence, and loss. In this scene, Ninny Threadgoode has finished telling Evelyn the years-long story that carries the whole film and, as they walk through a garden, poignantly realises that “the most important thing in life is friends.”

We love how this film rejoices in the genuine friendship between women, across decades and generations, that keeps us smiling even when times are hard. Here’s to best friends!
