Cinemoments: Thelma & Louise

Cinemoments: Thelma & Louise

During these trying and uncertain times, we have been trying to spread a little bit of love and movie magic by showcasing some of our favourite moments in film.

As International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March, this month is the perfect opportunity to highlight the most passionate, resilient and independent women on film. The feminist legacy of Thelma & Louise drove the national conversation about the state of the women’s movement when it hit cinema screens 30 years ago.

Starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, the iconic road movie signalled a brave new world for female characters in film. The film's sparkling script, which re-imagined the classic buddy film with such freshness and energy, combined with spirited performances, made for an inspirational and unexpected film, now considered a classic. In 2016, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

In this clip, Thelma and Louise drive across the expansive plains, pondering their next move and how and to where they will make their escape, feeling energised after some tough times. Enjoy!
