How They Lived, How They Shone

How They Lived, How They Shone

July saw the very sad loss of two towering figures within film - Oliva de Havilland and Alan Parker. We wanted to mark their passing and their contributions to our industry.

Passing away in Paris at the incredible age of 104, Olivia de Havilland was a true legend both on and off the screen.

She leaves behind a truly peerless body of work, including The Heiress, Dodge City, The Adventures of Robin Hood and so many more.

One of the last living ladies of the Golden Age of Hollywood, we simply love this elegant snap of Dame Olivia on the streets of Florence in 1961, capturing a moment of grace.

Alan Parker has been described has 'a master who could work in all genres' by Colm Meaney, star of his films The Commitments and Come See the Paradise.

Parker spent his early career as a copywriter and television advert director, before moving into an award-winning film career (an incredible 19 BAFTA Awards, ten Golden Globes and six Academy Awards®). He directed everything from musicals (including Bugsy Malone, which we recently celebrated via our Cinemoments strand) to true-life dramas such as Midnight Express and Mississippi Burning, and horrors and thrillers such as Angel Heart.

Rest in peace to both screen icons.
