Across the Bridge

Rod Steiger plays the unscrupulous financier, Carl Schaffner, who has absconded to Mexico with the company funds. A genius at improvisation, Schaffner manages to evade the authorities by murdering Paul Scarff and assuming the dead man's identity. However, Schaffner soon learns that Scarff was himself a fugitive from justice. In one of the most poignant performances by Steiger, ironically it is his love of Scarff's dog, Dolores, which leads him to his bitter end.
