Liliom, a rough-and-tumble carnival baker in Budapest, falls for young Julie. When the pair lose their jobs, they decide to marry; however, Liliom soon finds supporting himself and his new bride to be a challenge, and the couple's life together takes a dark turn.

When Liliom discovers that Julie is pregnant, he panics. Now desperate for money to support a family, he agrees to participate in a robbery planned by his friend, Strong-Arm. When the robbery goes disastrously wrong, Liliom kills himself rather than surrender to the police. He soon finds himself in Heaven's waiting room, where, after a trial in which is he confronted by figures from his past, it is decided that he cannot enter Heaven just yet. First, he must return to earth and perform one good deed.
