While visiting a penitentiary, country music star Garland Dupree (James Callahan) happens to hear a song by inmate Bobby Ogden (Peter Fonda) and decides to steal it. On the run, Ogden is helped out by a sympathetic backup singer (Susan Saint James) who circulates the real story of who wrote the song and effectively turns him into a folk hero.
