Edgar Brodie, a successful novelist, is persuaded by the head of the Secret Service to undertake an espionage ‘commission’ in Switzerland. Given a false name, Ashenden, and his instructions, he leaves for Geneva. His ‘commission’ is to stop a German spy, whose identity is unknown, from receiving orders which would be fatal to Allied war plans. Travelling to Turkey, Ashenden and his assistant, ‘The Mexican’, a genial murderer well versed in the art of killing and espionage, become involved in a trail of murder and intrigue.
