FIVE EASY PIECES - Restored & Back in Cinemas from Today

    A film by Bob Rafelson
Starring Jack Nicholson, Karen Black, Susan Anspach, Lois Smith, Billy 'Green' Bush, Fannie Flagg, Sally Ann Struthers, Ralph Waite
USA 1970, 96 minutes, BBFC Certificate: TBC

Director Bob Rafelson's seminal portrait of a disaffected America, which was originally released in 1970 to huge critical acclaim, will soon be back in cinemas.

As Robert Dupea, Jack Nicholson delivers a career-defining performance, embodying the tortured disillusionment with his suffocating family, his neglected talent as a piano prodigy, and his aimless life on the road working oil rigs. With his father terminally ill, he embarks on a trip back home, but reconciliation eludes him.

Nominated for four Academy Awards ('Best Actor in a Leading Role', 'Best Actress in a Supporting Role', 'Best Picture', and 'Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced'),  FIVE EASY PIECES boasts powerful performances from its cast.

Tammy Wynette provided five songs for the film's soundtrack, including the international hit 'Stand By Your Man'.

In celebration of its 40th Anniversary, FIVE EASY PIECES has been extensively restored by Sony Pictures and will open on brand new 35mm prints and in Digital Cinema format from 13 August at BFI Southbank, Filmhouse Edinburgh, Irish Film Institute, Ritzy Brixton, Tyneside Cinema Newcastle and key cities.

What the critics say about FIVE EASY PIECES:

***** "This superbly composed film comes as close to perfection as it gets." - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

***** "Hollywood’s early-’70s identity crisis produced a multitude of masterpieces, but few are fit to stand alongside Bob Rafelson’s autumnal 1970 tragedy ‘Five Easy Pieces’.’" - Tom Huddleston, Time Out

***** "Having landed an Oscar nom for EASY RIDER, Jack Nicholson promptly bagged another for his performance in Bob Rafelson's thematically similar 1970 tale of a frustrated drifter fleeing his past life as a piano prodigy." - Neil Smith, Total Film

***** "If you haven’t seen Five Easy Pieces, you simply must." - Nathan Francis, The Playground

***** "It is an urgent, funny, bleak film with Nicholson electric in the lead, relishing the surreal scene in which he plays a piano on the back of a truck in the midst of a traffic jam, and the famous chicken salad sandwich set-piece in the roadside diner." - Channel 4
