Park Circus is pleased to represent the 219-minute digital restoration of MGM’s Heaven’s Gate, which will be screening in the Classics section of this year’s Venice Film Festival (29th August - 8th September 2012) and will subsequently be available to book theatrically worldwide. Michael Cimino’s 1981 follow up to The Deer Hunter divided critics and the public alike on its initial release when it was shown in a shorter version (148 minutes). Cimino’s story of a lawyer (Kris Kristofferson) and his attempts to help immigrants out West in their struggle with a brutal cattle owners' association, which also stars Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Walken and John Hurt, has been digitally restored to its full Director’s Cut length. Over the last decade the film has been broadly reassessed, filmmaker Mark Cousins has written that the film is “America photographed like a 19th century painting.” While many other critics site the film is actually one of the key American films of its period. It’s time to unlock and slowly swing Heaven’s Gate open again.
