Larita is married to a drunk. After he catches her almost being seduced, he brings suit for divorce on the grounds of adultery. Since she is now a disgraced woman of "easy virtue", Larita goes to the French Riviera where she meets and marries a rich younger man, John Whittaker. She doesn't tell him about her past and they return to England to meet his family. His mother disapproves, suspecting Larita of immorality. Larita's past is revealed when she decides to allow John to divorce her so he can marry Sarah, a local girl whom his mother had in mind as a suitable match.

Verloc, the manager of a London West End Cinema, is also the secret chief of a terrorist organisation planning to destroy the London Underground Network. For his next task, he must leave a highly explosive bomb at Piccadilly Circus Station. The bomb is rigged to go off at a certain time and, in a classic piece of Hitchcock mastery, we witness the messenger boy, blissfully unaware of the parcel's contents, killed in a shockingly sudden explosion, together with the passengers on board the bus. Edgar Brodie, a successful novelist, is persuaded by the head of the Secret Service to undertake an espionage 'commission' in Switzerland. Given a false name, Ashenden, and his instructions, he leaves for Geneva. His 'commission' is to stop a German spy, whose identity is unknown, from receiving orders which would be fatal to Allied war plans. Travelling to Turkey, Ashenden and his assistant, 'The Mexican', a genial murderer well versed in the art of killing and espionage, become involved in a trail of murder and intrigue.
